We are commonly asked how we apply the sealer and which is a better method. The reason we are usually asked this question is because someone had a bad experience with one of the methods (usually spraying).
The answer is: when done PROPERLY neither is better or worse in the right situation.
Brushing can be done more neatly, so we always use brushes around the perimiters of the asphalt so we do not get any over spray on surrounding areas. WE ALWAYS USE BRUSHES ON RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAYS. Driveways are not large enough to spray and do a good, neat job. Brushing does however take much longer than spraying, so in certain situations spraying is the most effecient way to apply the sealer. These situations are generally for larger parking lots (we still brush around the edges).
You may have had someone spray apply sealer for you before and had the sealer wear prematurely. This was probably caused by one of two reasons: 1. The sealer was over-diluted with water (it's not going to last any longer if you brush on over-diluted sealer) or 2. The person spraying the sealer either didn't know what they were doing or they were intentionally putting down a very light coat. We believe it is penny wise-pound foolish to try to save a few dollars by doing a poor job for a customer once, when we can do a great job and build a relationship with our clients for life.
Please don't let a bad expereince (from a perhaps less than reputable contractor) prevent you from possibly saving money by having your lot sprayed if it is determined to be the most efficient method for your propery.
